Something Feels Special Today

Something feels special today. Perhaps it is because it’s the 1st Sunday of 2019. Perhaps it is the Epiphany when the three wiseman visited the Baby Jesus. Perhaps it is the 17th day of Winter. There are 73 days left till Spring. Perhaps it is 6th day of the year. There are then 359 days left in 2019 so it’s time to get those new year resolutions, mottos, and mantras into practice. Perhaps it is because today is the last day of the traditional Holidays. With New Years Day on a Tuesday this year, it was challenging to get a fresh start into the New Year. But I think it is because today is Cuddle Up Day. An opportunity to snuggle up to someone special. Chances are it’s cold outside. So, cozy up to a special someone, and enjoy the warmth and love.

Cuddle Up is a good thought but many people do not have a special person. I read this Census Bureau statistic from a study conducted back in 2017. In the United States there are 35.4 million people who lived alone in 2016. They comprised 28.1 percent of all households, up from 17.1 percent in 1970. Here’s another statistic from the same study. There are 19.5 million of unmarried U.S. residents age 65 and older in 2016. These seniors made up 17.7 percent of all unmarried people age 18 and older. Another Study reported ‘Half of Americans view themselves as lonely.”

I think it is safe to say that many people will not Cuddle Up today. Health experts are saying Loneliness is one of the largest health concerns we face. Here is a sampling of what health experts are saying about Loneliness. Loneliness, living alone and poor social connections are as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness is worse for you than obesity. Lonely people are more likely to suffer from dementia, heart disease and depression. Loneliness is likely to increase your risk of death by 29%. It is sad to see society moving into the Loneliness direction. We live in a technology age with text messaging, Viber, Line, WhatsApp, Facetime, Facebook, and many ways for people to connect. But I think these technological connections are better than nothing, but Never Better than actually touching someone.

Why does something feel so special today? I woke up with a wonderful memory. I was in Tokyo riding the train to the Downtown area. When I got off the train there was a small group of people holding signs “FREE HUGS”. I walked up to a lady and said I’ll take a hug. It made my day. It did something remarkable, a simple hug.

Even in our touch-averse culture, everyone needs platonic physical contact. The power of touch is profound. It heals, connects, nourishes and soothes.

Give a FREE HUG TODAY.
